Phonics
A What is Phonics?
  • A method of teaching people to read by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letter in an alphabetic writing system.
  • This is when a kindergarten student learns that the letter "D" has the sound /d/ and when a first or second grade student learns that "tion" sounds like /shun/.

Why is phonics important?
  • If a child understands phonics, then it will be easier for the child to be able to read and write. Phonics allows children to understand that individual letters represent sounds. This skill will allow children to decode unfamiliar words whenever they are reading and writing.

When should phonics be taught?
  • Phonics is a skill that is taught in the primary grades (K-2). In Kindergarten, child usually learn the sounds of consonants (b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,q,r,s,t,v,w,x,y,z) and vowel (a,e,i,o,u). The teacher will typically decide upon how these letters are introduced and taught to their students. In first and second grade, children begin learning letter combinations and word parts. Additionally, children start practicing reading and writing the letter patterns in order to become fluent readers and writers.
